Are Big Box Retailers Reading Blogs?

I'm not a regular shopper in big box stores but today I was looking for some new wine glasses and headed out to HomeSense.  I was gobsmacked to see how many products they are carrying that are making their rounds in blogland.  Wow, someone's paying attention.

Here's a sampling of what I saw...

So what do think?  Are bloggers influencing the choices of retailers or are bloggers copying what's out in the stores?

  1. Oh I think they definitely have a team of people who are "in the know" about design trends...like the chevron lamp shades I found at Target!

  2. I think that they definitely do their research and know what consumers want!

  3. They're definitely on top of what's going on. But then, they're all going to the same interior design shows, following interiors mags and making buying trips. And fabric designers are always coming out with their new fabrics. Eventually everything funnels down from high end to cheaper knock-offs and then the big box stores pick them up. I think bloggers are definitely copying what's in the stores and in design mags.

  4. I hope bloggers are influencing big boxes. It would be really nice to have consumers have some say over what is produced.

  6. They'd be smart to read the blogs, right? I see a lot of things like this at Home Goods, too, and have wondered the same thing. they are definitely doing a great job of keeping on trend!

  11. You bring up an excellent point. I'm equating the store you were in to Home Goods here and you're right, they are very up on the trends and the look of what is current. I didn't even think that maybe they are keeping up that way - it makes sense.

  15. I am being lazy and not emailing because that means logging out of my blog. I visit Toronto often to see family. Email me (or leave a comment, lol) and let me know when you will be there and I will try to make my trip coincide with yours because it would be fabulous to meet! And maybe shop. Lol.

  16. We don't have a HomeSense here, but i do believe that there are PR people behind such stores like HomeSense, Target, etc. who research what's hot/trendy. Blogs are the best place to find that out, thus us influencing the type of products they sell. Great observation! xx

  17. To be honest, it both thrills and concerns me. If "blog inspired" decor has hit big box stores, is it a sign that these trends have gone too mainstream?

  19. OH MY GOSH, I LOVE that blue and green shelf/cabinet thingee. (Does it have a real name?) I think I need a room in my house that has funky colors in it. I keep pinning bring colored things....

I'm kind of with DecorandtheDog - chicken or the egg? Either way I love it all. :-)

  20. i work in Marketing and I always look at blogs to see what the cool kids are doing when marketing new products, but it's my lifestyle as well, so it's hard to say.
